Fashion Cafe

By Hannah Bell
3rd March, 2011

The students at City College Norwich who are part of the Creative and Media Advanced Diploma course have been asked to contribute to the planning of a new fashion café.
The idea was launched in October, 2009, providing an exciting opportunity for the students to test their skills and prove to the community what colleges can offer for young people.
The Creative and Media course which was new to the college at the beginning of 2009, aims to show the students exactly what happens in the real world of Creative and Media industries. Participating students of the fashion café will be encouraged to think and work creatively, while learning practical skills to bring their ideas to life.
Future plans see the café located in the area of Norwich city centre where the students and supporting staff will pay a rental fee.
The students have been given the go-ahead to start preparing and organizing every detail, including the layout and interior design.
Although no budget cost has yet been confirmed, students appear to be taking on a realistic and professional approach to the financial aspects of the project.
As well as providing an original menu and a personalised seating area, plans for the café so far also include a hair and beauty section where the public will be able to treat themselves at a reasonable price.
A participating student said ‘We are going to display student’s artwork on the walls and have a kind of spar treatment thing going on. This way we are creating a business but also showing the public what the college and it’s student’s have to offer. It’s also ideal for getting some real experience in the creative business.’
There will also be an information area based around Norwich and the goings-on at city college.
The fashion café has been very popular amongst the college and though the Creative and Media students will choose the design and layout, there are plans to include other course students in the project.
Students studying Construction courses will be given the chance to assist in the structure and building while those studying Textiles can help in the production of the café’s accessories.
Staff and students seem to be highly motivated and hope to see the café up and running in the near future.
