Land Of Black Rock And Sun

By Susan Smith
21st September, 2013

Lanzarote

At Timanfaya Palace, welcoming staff and happy guests were a good start

Pools, gardens, red paths, with white Arabic style hotel at the heart

Edged by a promenade and backdrop of glittering blue sea

Light winds and bright sunshine – what better place to be?

To Rubicon Marina, we travelled to by bus

An enchanting nautical paradise, we found without fuss

The lanes were lined with craft stalls, a good mixture to explore

Snapping up gifts we hoped family and friends would adore.

By car to Timanfaya Volcano, encircled by wavy black rock and dust

Luna -like, now dormant - in experts we must trust

Pretty villages with pale houses in the distance could be seen

Bedecked with vivid flowers and foliage of bright green

The Foundation of Cesar Manrique just couldn’t be missed

Lanzarote’s famous sculptor, architect and artist

His home now a gallery and in itself a piece of art

In lava formed caves, rooms created, a swimming pool- the finest part

At Playa Flamingo we enjoyed a day at the beach

Sunbeds, umbrellas, pedaloes – bars and cafés in easy reach

Families playing games on palm fringed sands

Turquoise sea, views of another island, and the sound of exotic lands.

A holiday of warmth and relaxation, entertainment and delicious food

Happy memories treasured for our return home in a stress free mood

After packing, our last evening was savoured with a black and white theme

A saxophonist, then last photo shoot, sweet liqueurs, all a happy dream.
