Mother And Children Escape Uninjured After Washing Machine Breakdown Leads To Kitchen Fire

By Kevin Burke
9th February, 2015

A woman has been praised for her quick-thinking after she ensured that she and her children escaped from a house fire.

On February 6th at 02:22am, London Fire Brigade was alerted about a kitchen fire in a flat at Swedenborg Gardens in Shadwell, and dispatched crews from Bethnal Green, Dowgate and Whitechapel to the property.

However, the fire had already extinguished by the time the emergency services arrived, and the incident was declared as over by 02:27am. It is thought that the fire was caused by an electrical fault that had originated in the washing machine, but the mother handled the washing machine breakdown perfectly.

Chris Jones, Whitechapel Watch Manager, said the woman "did everything right".

The property had a working smoke alarm, which alerted the mother to the home emergency. She then closed the kitchen door, and, after she had called the fire brigade, she took her family to a part of the flat that was not affected by smoke.

Mr Jones said this incident underlines the importance of using a working smoke alarm. When fires happen, these devices provide people with "vital seconds" that they can use to escape the scene, he continued.

He recommended that people install one smoke alarm on every level of their house and that they test these alarms regularly.
