Blackburn, history and present-day details...
Located along a Roman road from Manchester to Ribchester could be found the village of Blackburn Hundred in NE Lancashire. The name is thought to come from a local stream, 'Blakewater'. St Mary's church is listed in the Domesday book and this religious site is thought to date back to AD600. The local Grammar School dates back to the early 1500s.
Blackburn was known as the cotton weaving capital of the world come the late 1800s. The industrial revolution and the textile industry boomed, taking raw cotton from America for textile produce to sell on all over the world. Transport systems significantly improved this growth market, notably the Leeds - Liverpool Canal and railways.
The textile industry gradually gave way to the engineering and, more recently, electronics industries. Blackburn is a multi-cultural town with deep-rooted history from the dark-ages and its people are proud of its industrious heritage.
