Barnsley in mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1086 as two hamlets, Crevesford and Bernesiai, with about 200 or so dwellers.
Two priories were founded in the area and prospered as both religious order and provider of work and income to the residents until their dissolution in 1539 under the reign of King Henry VIII.
Coal mining has been undertaken in the Barnley area for centuries, which fuelled the glass-blowing industry which started to build up early in the 1600s.
