Barnsley, history and present-day details...

Barnsley in mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1086 as two hamlets, Crevesford and Bernesiai, with about 200 or so dwellers.

Two priories were founded in the area and prospered as both religious order and provider of work and income to the residents until their dissolution in 1539 under the reign of King Henry VIII.

Coal mining has been undertaken in the Barnley area for centuries, which fuelled the glass-blowing industry which started to build up early in the 1600s.

At the start of the industrial revolution, William Wilson introduced linen weaving to the town and by the close of the 18th century there were hundreds of looms in operation.

Into the 1800s and Barnsley becomes a thriving town with a population of over 3000. It deservedly gets a place on the railway system and its own station. Road systems start to improve, as does the sanitation and street layouts and general living standards in Barnsley.

Today, the coal pits have closed and Barnsley has undergone major changes to redevelop industries and people skills. Yet, the people of Barnsley are happy to greet visitors with a friendly welcome.
