Swansea lies within the Gower and Lliw Valley on the south coast of Wales. There is evidence of human life dating back as far as 2000BC in this region. The Romans came and went, as did the Vikings, each leaving their buildings of defence.
In the 12th century, the English name, Sweynesse, is believed to have come from a Viking King of the 10th century. The Welsh name, Abertawe, is translated as, 'the mouth of the Tawe', the river upon which Swansea has evolved.
Later in the 1100s the French Normans realised the potential of Swansea's position by the sea and by the 1400s had established Swansea as a major ship-building port.
Swansea has benefited from its rich sources of a wide variety of minerals and metals over hundreds of years. In Tudor times the metals of iron, copper and zinc were mined here and transported. Much later, Swansea fuelled, literally, the industrial revolution with coal.
Tourists have been welcomed to Swansea for over 200 years. It made its name as a fashionable seaside resort in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Swansea underwent heavy bombing during the 2nd world war, probably due to it being a major port and oil supplier to the British Navy. The city sustained heavy bombing with many historical building being demolished.
The most recent change for Swansea has been from the decline of the coal mining industry to more modern retail and manufacturing enterprises, employing over 7000 people.
