Dudley, history and present-day details...
Dudley, or as it was referred to in Anglo-Saxon times, Dudda Leah, appears to have developed from a small hamlet at the foot of what is now Dudley Castle. The castle dates back to the Doomsday Book entry of 1086. By the late 13th century Dudley was a major cattle market town and had its own law courts. Dudley was also a producer of iron nails through the 15th and 16th centuries.
King Henry VIII's dissolution of Dudley's Priory in 1585 was a catastrophe for local residents as the monks provided education and hospital treatment.
During the civil war of the 1600s, like most towns, Dudley suffered irreparable damage. However, some good came of this with the re-building process and some quite of grand houses popping up.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution gave rise to mines and factories, to the detriment of open land. This significant growth in work increased the population. However, due to the not-so-rapid improvements to sanitation and alike, life, short-lived so it was, was not that pleasant.
Moving on from the 19th century and into the 20th, better road systems and advances in technology and transport laid the foundation for what you see in Dudley today. With Birmingham only a stones-throw away and with other major towns in the area, Dudley has become part of quite an industrious network within the West Midlands.
